Jarred Kelenic

I haven't seen Jarred Kelenic this high on any other prospect lists. I know he's solid, but why so high?

Simply the potential of a player who was drafted out of high school and in his first pro season in a little over 200 at bats had 6 home runs and 15 stolen bases. Remember he is just 19 and you are looking at a potential 20-20 player with a decent BAvg

update (from John Calvagno)

It only took Kelenic 50 games to earn a promotion to the Modesto Nuts in the California League. That’s quite an accomplishment for a young hitter. But he laid waste to Sally pitching to the tune of .309/.394/.596. With an 11% walk rate and a 20% K rate. He was my pick for the best hitter at the level coming into the season but what I wasn’t expecting was the .287 ISO and the double digit HR in a mere 218 plate appearances. He’s showing more power than I think most anticipated at least this quickly. Part of that is he’s becoming more pull heavy. According to Fangraphs, his contact to the pull side is up 6% from his 44 game sample in Kingsport last Summer. And Flyball’s are up 7%.

A final update at MLB.com released it's final Top 100 today

"The only newcomer to the top 15 is Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic, who rises from No. 22 to No. 14 in the wake of hitting .291/.364/.540 with 23 homers and 20 steals in his first full season and reaching Double-A shortly after turning 20."
