Was really hoping he would become 2B and/or 3B eligible and the Cards would give Jose Martinez some reps at 1B. I don't like how this sounds.

Matt Carpenter, programmed to play several positions this spring, will be spending most of his time defensively at first base when the Cardinals start their full-scale workouts on Monday.
Manager Mike Matheny said Carpenter had been experiencing some back tightness _ he was slowed by a back ailment last spring that turned out to be an oblique strain _ but Carpenter said he had no concern "at all" about this back stiffness.
