Need help deciding my keepers based on the context of our league since transitioning from rotisserie. This is 1st year of keepers in HTH....

Here goes: 5 keepers, 12 team HTH - most categories gets 1 win for the week. No player can be kept more then 3 years, period.

1 C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, 2 UT. 5 SP, 3 RP, 7 bench (25 total)
R, SB, HR, RBI, OBP x QS, SV, Ks, WHIP, ERA (5x5)
The only keepers worth discussing are as follows:

Choose 1 from this list who will count as my 2nd round pick, 17th overall:
Fielder, Kershaw, Kinsler, HanRam

Choose 4-
Yadier in 15th, A Jones in 5th, Profar in 23rd, B Hamilton 23rd, Taveras 23rd, Bundy 23rd, L Cain 23rd, Addison Reed 21st
(If I keep more then 1 guy in the 23rd, the next gets kept in the 22nd, etc... For example, if I keep both Profar and Taveras, one would count as a 22nd round keeper and the other in the 23rd)

From the "Choose 4" Section:
Addison Reed - no brainer in the 21st
Yadier - the 15th is a steal
A Jones - right at value, maybe a slight bargain, either way 280-90-90-25-15 is worth it
any 1 of those 23 round prospects, whichever one you have the biggest man-crush on

From the Clayton vs. Prince Section:
Who else is available that figures to be a 1st round pick? If there are a lot of big sticks out there, I keep Clayton. If any of Verlander/Felix/Strasburg/Weaver/Cain/Hamels are out there, I might throw Clayton back figuring I either get him or 1 of those other guys as my 1st pick.

Do you have a pick in the 1st round? Is so where?

Are any of your 23rd rounders not first year keeps? (IOW going into year 2)

Capt'n - No player has ever been kept, so any of these guys can be kept 3x. So this year anyone can be kept for years '13, '14, and even '15. Each year kept, that player moves up 2 rounds.

And we can only keep 1 player drafted in the 1st 5 rounds, so that is why i am leaning to Prince over Kershaw. Either one of those would be kept 17th overall.

My 1st round pick is 8th, so these will be available as the top players not kept that I know of: Kemp, Tulo, J-Up, Cargo, Pujols, Kershaw, Reyes, HanRam, Beltre, Bautista, and Cano.

Okay given information above these would be my picks and reason

1) 2nd round pick - I would keep Kershaw (because you can pick a great hitter in round 1)

2) Choosing 4 assuming you are playing for this year - I would keep Yadier, A. Jones, L. Cain, and Reed
ALL players who will help you for the whole year where at best Profar, Hamilton, Taveras, and Bundy will only help you for a small portion of the year (as of current information)
OBVIOUSLY if those situations change - Cain hurt longer or Profar making the team then you might change horses but remember Job 1 is to win this year which trumps having a better keeper(s) for next year

Given the 1st round hitters available, I agree that Kershaw should be your keeper. Worst case is you end up with both Fielder and Clayton again.

Yadi, Adam and Addison for sure, the Captain and I both agree.

I understand his logic for wanting you to also keep Cain in the 23rd. I would still keep one of those great prospects however. I actually think one of those prospects will help you win more THIS YEAR than Cain. Come July, someone in your league will be ready to trade something great for 1 of those prospects, folks won't be tripping over themselves to acquire Cain from you. But, if you know your leaguemates and don't see a lot of trading in the future, I could see keeping Cain. But in a league with active trading, I want the sexiest trade chip possible.
