Some guy named Harper called up

#1 Post by viper »

Anyone know anything about this guy? j/k

The Nats waited the needed days so they don't lose a year of control. That was 21 days. If he stays up, the Lerners will have to deal with a Super Two but, if he does will, certainly the fans will not care.

In my NL only leagues, he will command big dollars I suppose. They won't come from me however, in part because we have no bench. Still I will make a bid.

My first game is the 14th against the Padres with tickets also on that Friday against the Orioles.

He'll be interesting to watch for sure ...but I think you may want to recheck that 21 day idea, Viper. Being called up prior to May 1, there is an excellent chance (let's face it - almost guaranteed unless he totally screws the pooch) he gets Super II classification - especially when considering the percentage has been bumped from 17% to 22%. I commend the Nats for bringing him up right now - this looks like the move of a team that thinks it can make a run this year and the Super II be damned - unlike some other teams (Helloooo, Pittsburgh).

Harper signed a 5-year MLB contract - I need to do some looking, but doesn't this pretty much make all the arb/super 2 stuff moot?

If he stays up, he will be super 2. The bigger issue was if he made the club at the start of the season. Had that happened, he would have been a free agent one year earlier. The rule for the current CBA is if you are in the show show 160 days in a year, that year counts towards how soon you become a free agent. The season is 180 days long and he will have missed the first 28 [or thereabouts] of them.

The current Super Two requirements have the estimated magic date go from Late May/early June to Late June. How he does will tell the tale there. Trout was destined for Super Two but I don't think so any more. Same could happen to Harper.

Super-Two for Harper is moot as the 5 year deal buys him out of the time that would occur.
