Victor Martinez may be OUT for all of 2012

#1 Post by Captain Hook »

from a news item on ESPN....

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez suffered a torn ACL during his offseason training and will likely need surgery to repair the damage.

An MRI exam Monday in Lakeland, Fla., revealed the injury.

The Tigers said Martinez will be re-evaluated next week, but if surgery is necessary Martinez will likely miss the entire 2012 season.

Martinez hit .330 with 103 RBIs last season in helping Detroit win the AL Central.

Information from The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Ouch, that one's going to leave a mark. Hello Prince Fielder!?

was just reading that one....OUCH! sorry for those who have already drafted him.
should open up some ABs in the Det lineup. Probably an unsigned DH type. Anyone thnks this affects the rest of the lineup projections?

I don't think they will invest that kind of money to get Fielder. I could see a DH type (Damon, Vlad) at a relatively cheap
price on a one year contract.

Only 26 games at C last year for VMart, the bulk of his PT at DH.

Not much of an impact in terms of catching PT -- it's a DH-replacement, as others alluded to here, more than anything.

Hey, what do you know, I'm right for a change, neither my wife nor league mates will believe it.

Do you guys think the VMart injury prompted the Fielder signing or was it going to happen regardless of VMart?

I think this signing was 100% related to the VMart injury. Sure, a team might acquire 3 DH/1B types, but not with contracts this big. They are their 3 highest paid hitters. Its not like they are going to use a lefty/right platoon.

I am extremely curious to see how this plays out over the next 14 months.

The Tigers say that Cabrera will be moved to third base. I think it was MLB Network that said he had played 14 games at
third as a Tiger. In those 14 games he made 5 errors. It's a small sample size, but extrapolated out to 162 games, that's
about 58 errors.
