Napoli owners - be advised

#1 Post by da_big_kid_94 »

The Rangers have just traded Matt Treanor to the Royals. Watch the Texas 25 man roster on Wednesday/Thursday - if they start the season with two catchers, a lot of those 1B/DH at bats we had in mind for Napoli just went up in smoke.
These are my views based on my own opinions and observations - your mileage may vary.

The Rangers needed to make this move to make room on the 40 and 25 man rosters for Rule 5 pick Mason Tobin. Obviously - they liked what they saw enough to keep him for now. Injuries to the starters forced their hand here. It seems they also aren't ready to give up on Dave Bush just yet - as Mike Maddux has reportedly insisted that he can/will contribute for the Rangers. Bush could have opted out of his contract if he didn't make the team - and someone likely would have scooped him up. I don't think this is such big news. In the opening weeks - perhaps Napoli sees less time at DH/1B - but the Rangers are still going to trade Michael Young at some point you would think. Wouldn't surprise me to see Taylor Teagarden get called back up as soon as T Hunter is healthy again.

Of course - this is all written from the perspective of a Napoli owner who won't panic just yet ;)

I'm not worried either. Napoli only needs 350-380 AB to return value, so I'm not worried. Anything more than that is just gravey in my mind.

That all depends on where he was drafted or how much was spent on him at the auction.

While I would no longer jump on him in the 7th or 8th round like before, there are still some avenues to more playing time so if the discount drops him to rounds 11 or so, he will be back on my radar.

My ranking for Napoli comes from two projection sources. Both project Napoli for around 350 AB's. He's projected to hit over 20Hr's by both and checks in as about the #8-10 C available.

Any AB's he adds to these totals is as Black Sox notes "gravy". That is/was the beauty of Napoli. He was slotted right behind a lot of flashier names and he is the guy (outside of Santana) whose numbers increase dramatically with even the slightest uptick in PT.
