Mastersball CONSENSUS RANKINGS -- CATCHER

#1 Post by Todd Zola »

Please list your top-10 catchers for a mixed 5x5 roto league (HR, RBI, SB, BA, R)

We will total up the points and come up with a site consensus ranking.

Feel free to discuss the catcher position as well as offer your top-10.

McCann - I'll take the HR over the BA
Martin - I like the SB
Mauer - Because he's not #1 or #2
Soto - Cubbies vs Pirates
Doumit - Pirates vs Cubbies
V Mart - If he isn't behind the plate he'll be playing somewhere
Napoli - He'd be higher if he got more AB's
Wieters - Either he's this good or catchers are that bad
Clement - Too bad Johjima's still around
Posada - Reports say shoulder's fine

The top 4 are inter-changeable and depending on where they end at my auction will determine which one I make a push for.

McCann - could a couple doubles turn into even more HRs?
Doumit - grounders down, line drives up 3 years running
Mauer - 500+AB's and .300+ if he could only lift the ball but perhaps with age
Martin - love the stolen bases!!
Martinez - here's hoping more AB's NOT catching help him stay healthy
Soto - smacks the heck out of the ball, love his home park and lineup
Napoli - Mathis stealing ABs is a concern as is the drag on your AVG
Molina - wish he didn't play half of his games in SF
Posada - under rated hitter, love the plate discipline and lineup
Clement - will only get better

1. Joe Mauer
2. Brian McCann
3. Geovany Soto
4. Russell Martin
5. Victor Martinez
6. Ryan Doumit
7. Bengie Molina
8. A.J. Pierzynski
9. Chris Iannetta
10. Mike Napoli

Mike Napoli- I am concerned about his shoulder recovery. He's still not throwing. There's chatter about him getting DH at-bats if he's not ready to catch. However, there's a large contingent of Angel players looking for DH at-bats with the signing of Abreu. If he gets his AB, the power is for real and I would move him up.

Matt Wieters- If he is on Orioles opening day roster, I put him in the 5-6 spot and bump everyone else down. If he start in minors, I won't have him in my top-15. I'm not sure 4 months of Wieters plus 2 months of replacement level catcher will be worth it. Of course, in Ryan Braun's case in 2007 it was worth it. I may have to re-think him. :?: (In a keeper league, I put him at 5)

Victor Martinez/Ryan Doumit- If I don't get one of the top-4 C, I'm going to skip them and target 2 of the next 6-7 catchers. It's more of a gut feel than anything I can quantitatively explain. They are going to command higher draft slots than I'm willing to risk.

Chris Snyder- If I thought he could get an extra 100 AB, I would bump the reliable Pierzynski and go for the upside. Miguel Montero is still there, so I don't know where those AB come from.

Overall- A fairly deep C pool this year. There are some decent options at each point in the draft depending on ones strategy

Mauer--tremendous batting eye, usually chips in with 7-8 sb.
McCann--neck and neck with Mauer.
Martin--SB will come down one of these years, catchers just aren't built to run.
VMart--bounce back season, best bet for profit
Soto--power from a catcher is like finding money in the dirty laundry.
Doumit--breakout or career season? I'm thinking he regresses.
Bengie Molina-consistent and getting older.
Pierrzynski--also consistent, not as old.
Navarro--virtually identical to Yadier Molina.
Napoli--may get 30hr but the average is not going to be pretty.

McCann
Mauer
Doumit
Martin
Soto
Martinez-Where did the power go? Will it come back and if so, to what level?
B. Molina
Wieters-Might spend two months in the minors
Pierzynski-not a sexy pick, but reliability is good
Posada-Age is a concern

McCann -- easy head of the class for me
Mauer -- I share Gary's concern about players ranked so high mainly on volatile batting average
Martin -- can't count on steals or he could be #1
Doumit -- average looks real, but basically a poor man's Mauer
Napoli -- assumes shoulder is okay, if not, tumbles down
Soto -- rare case of someone whose half-season in the minors with a new approach translated to the bigs
VMart -- would jump all over him of he were available this low
B Molina -- won't repeat last season, but will still be in meat portion of the order
Wieters -- man amongst boys, will play his way onto the big league roster
Clement -- probably safer options like AJP, but if he gets the AB, he will be a top-10 guy.

Maybe its just me, but I feel Chris Iannetta is being missed here. A couple others listed him, but I think I would rather own Iannetta instead of a Molina type for what ever reason.

I think It is in the upside factor vs We know what we get with Bengie...

Anyone feel the same way?

I also notice that Catcher is Deeper than usual. You have a top tier, then a lot of midtier options...

Personally, I would wait and grab a Snyder/Ramon hernandez Combo late instead of reaching in 2009...

I'm kinda worried about our "consensus ranking".
Over 130 thread views and only 9- Top 10 lists.
Talk about a small sample size!

A lot of that would be people checking back in and reading the updated posts - not just someone not participating in the rankings. Although it would be nice if everyone posted their rankings.

1. McCann - Someone has to drive in the runs in ATL. Nice power.
2. Mauer - Consistent hitting machine. Others may provide more power, but more fluctuation year to year as well.
3. Soto - This one is a gut call. I think Martin has been used pretty heavily. He's still young, so again, gut call. Nice power, nice team.
4. Martin - See above.
5. Vic Mart - I placed him here do to health. If he fully rebounds I'd rank him 3. If he regresses I could see him slipping down past Wieters.
6. Doumit - I'm in. Though given the at bats, I think he could be passed by...
7. Napoli - Shoulder is a concern, as is the presence of Mathis. But dude rakes, and last I checked the Halos could use some pop.
8. Wieters - I would slot him 5th if I knew he was coming up as early as Longoria did last year.
9. Molina - Rock of consistency at the C. Not great, but always good.
10. Clement - This is my least confident selection. I want to believe... but I don't see him sticking at the position, and I'm not sure he turns the corner yet in 09.

I'll be very interested to see how well Posada rebounds. Many of you have him on your top ten list and yet I've seen him unowned in quite a few 12-14 team mixed leagues that only carry one catcher.

My rankings:
Russell Martin - I think he returns to mid to upper teens power again, and I love his positional flexibility
Joe Mauer - he is what he is, which is quite good
Vic Martinez - I think he gets the most at bats of all the catchers, which makes him fairly valuable with his skillset
Brian McCann - he could easily be #1 or #2, as the top four are pretty malleable
Geovany Soto - the only reason he's not higher is because I'm a little worried about a slight batting average regression, but he could easily be moved up if you're feeling frisky
Ryan Doumit - yay Pirates
Bengie Molina - he's consistent
Mike Napoli - he's not consistent, but he's got a boatload of power
Matt Wieters - when will the O's call him up, I wonder. I won't rank him higher until seeing him against big league pitching.

Honorable Mention: Jeff Clement, who I think will see a lot of success power-wise as long as you can weather the low batting average

I finally dove into the mixed pool this weekend after focusing mainly on the AL. So:

1. Martin - I'm a sucker for across the board production
2. McCann - power and counting stats (more of a 1A in my mind)
3. Mauer - great AVG, what else?
4. VMart - got a lot to prove this year, I think more ABs at 1st and DH will only help
5. Doumit - probably hitting in a much better spot than.....
6. Soto - can he repeat? i can't see him hitting any higher than 6th, more likely 7th
7. Napoli - I don't know why, I just don't trust him
8. Molina - nothing sexy, but gets the job done
9. Pierzynski - never gets any love, I always seem to end up w/ him
10.Weiters - this ranking assumes he breaks camp with the big club

I'd put Clement at 10 if Weiters stayed in the minors. One of my leagues has Pablo Sandoval catcher eligible for this year. If your league allows you to play him there, I'd put him at #8 and bump everyone else down accordingly.
