NFBC Sat Team Picking from the 1 spot

#1 Post by Hambowen »

Here is an NFBC Sat team I recently drafted. Any comments welcome on where I need to focus and what I might be light in.

1st pick:
Hanley SS
2/3 turn:
Zimmerman 3B
Phillips 2B
- Big fan of the SS,3B,2B strat this year. With the first pick it is very easy to do. Why 1st pick is my preferred spot this year. Zimmerman only top 3b left. Had choice of Phillips and Pedroia here and went with Phillips.

4/5 Turn:
Johan Santana SP
Shin Soo Choo OF
- All the top closers were still on the board and I considered them here unless Johan and Choo both made it to me and they did. Also considered Tori Hunter and Wainwright.

6/7 Turn:
Tori Hunter OF
Cliff Lee SP
- Top 3 closers gone at this point. Was tough decision for me between Lee or Soria. Went Lee as I really like him this year. Could have gone either way.

8/9 Turn:
McClouth OF
Wandy SP
- 2 guys I really like. Usually do not have 3 SP's like this but happy with them. Considered Napoli and grabbing a closer. Rolled the dice both would still be there with next picks. Still good closers left at this point but liked these 2 guys too much to pass up.

10/11 Turn:
Qualls RP
Napoli C
- Qualls was only "real" closer left so was lucky I at least got him because I usually like to have 2 real closers leaving the draft. Not even having 1 would have been real bad. Also really liked Laroche at this pick but went with the scarcity over a 1B.

12/13 Turn:
Laroche 1B
Damon OF
- Somehow Laroche made it back to me and i was real excited. Went with best players on board this round which included Damon.

Will just list rest of the draft from here.
14: Rich Harden - Could not pass on him at this point.
15. Prado - Best MI available and gives flexibility
16. Swisher - My CI. Really wanted to pair him with Magglio in the 17th but needed a closer.
17. Kerry Wood - Needed to take a chance on some saves given I only had 1 guy. Sad i did not get Magglio because of my saves issue.
18. Buehrle - Happy to see him at this point so I grabbed him
19. Alex Gordon - Never owned this guy in any league until this year and find myself owning him a lot now. I am value player more then young stud guy so that probably explains why.
20. Correia
21. Francouer
22. Seth Smith
23 Carlos Santana - my 2nd catcher
24 - 30 Garland, Saito, Hammel, Cook, Gregg, Westbrook,

Overall I really like this team and think it has a good chance.
- Feel like I had a lot of good value in the middle rounds which is what should happen when you go scarcity in the beginning.
- Have lots of guys that are HR/SB guys which is nice and hope I can be strong in both cats even though I do not have many specialists.
- Have some BA drains and some BA studs so will be interesting to see where it nets out.
- Don't have a 2nd starting Catcher right now which is an issue.
- Love my starting pitching which is not usually the case for me. Santana, Lee, Wandy, Harden, Buehrle, is strong first 5.
- Light on Saves which worries me. Like Qualls but that is it for saves right now. Have Wood who Hopefully will get saves this season. Also have Saito and Gregg that could get some at some point. Saito also nice bad SP matchup play.

Let me know what you guys think. Would love to hear what weaknesses you see so I can try to improve them on Waiver wire or through Lineup decisions. Don't be gentle!!

looks like you did a nice job. obviously you need a second catcher. ideally that will be santana, and of course wood is problematic.

might have taken choo too soon, but, totally stole napoli. and, considering how your of turned out, taking choo was just fine (i just don't see him hitting 30, but i am happy to be wrong).

I'm picking #2 in a satellite Thurs and would like to emulate 4 of your first 5 - Johan being the odd man out.

Lawr - Was not much else i liked at that pick. Only other people to consider were another SP in Wainwright, Hunter as an OF (who i got on the way back) or a top closer. Looking at my team and how the draft played out I think a top closer instead of Choo might have been better but I am a big Choo fan.

Todd - Assuming you want to go those 4 and a closer replacing Johan? Or would you have gone another Sp like Wainwright, Lester, or Vazquez? Those 3 were available along with all the closers.

Sort of depends on what else happened, but I may have doubled up on OF or gone closer.
