THIRD BASE CONSENSUS RANKINGS

#1 Post by Todd Zola »

Please rank your top-10 THIRD baseman using standard 5x5 rotisserie scoring rules (HR, BA, RBI, SB, R)

Feel free to provide commentary.

Scoring will be done MVP style, your top 3b will get 10 points.

Let's include the following at 3B and not the other position(s) they qualify:

Kevin Youkilis, Pablo Sandoval, Mark Reynolds, Jorge Cantu, Chase Headley

1.) A. Rodriguez - You pretty know what you are getting here. I expect him to sit more and run less this year.
2.) E. Longoria - I really wanted to put him at 1. No SBs and the Avg held me from doing so...still seems like there is room for growth though.
3.) D. Wright - If the homers come back he will end up #1 at season's end.

4.) P. Sandoval - Dual 1B/3B eligibility is a bonus. Tough park and mediocre line up surrounding him.
5.) M. Reynolds - Another dual eligibily guy. Ks are a concern, but it seems to work for R. Howard. Love the SBs too!
6.) R. Zimmerman - Too bad he is stuck on the Nats.

7.) K. Youkilis - Would love to see him with 150+ games played one of these years. Older than I realized...31!
8.) A. Ramirez - Only played half a season last year, but numbers were in line with rest of career. Solid bounce back canidate if you miss out on any of the names above.
9.) G. Beckham - Will gain 2B eligibility this year, so he gets "bonus" points in my mind.

10.) M. Young - Love the line up, love the park. Hopefully the power from '09 remains with the always good/great Avg.

Also considered J. Cantu, C. Jones, and C. Figgins

1. Alex Rodriguez - Top 5 pick, hands down. Probably top 3.
-----------------------
2. Evan Longoria - Stud. Not sure I like his commercial for MLB 2K10, though.
3. David Wright - I have high hopes for a power rebound in the low 20's.
-----------------------
4. Kevin Youkilis - I find him a bit more stable and with a much better line-up than the guys just below him.
5. Ryan Zimmerman - His development was fun to watch last year.
6. Pablo Sandoval - Love him, but sheesh, that's still a pretty crappy line-up around him.
7. Mark Reynolds - Color me skeptical on the steals. And that batting average shouldn't be nearly as lucky this year.
-----------------------
8. Gordon Beckham - How does low 20's power and mid teens steals sound? Yeah, I'm buying.
9. Chone Figgins - He won't score nearly as many runs now that he's in a much weaker line-up than 2009. I'm also worried about durability.
10. Aramis Ramirez - I'm not in love with him, but his ceiling is much higher than anyone else who could've slotted here.
I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something I loved from my childhood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us. Mr. Stay Puft! We used to roast Stay-Puft marshmallows, by the fire, at Camp Waconda.

Wright - That's right. In a few years we will all be laughing at what an outlier his 09 was. I'll take 300 25/25 100/100 every day of the week
ARod - Is he really any less risky than Wright?? More HR and RBI than DW, but less steals and probably less AVG.
Longoria - 35+ HR seems a lock. The way TB runs, 10+ bags is within reach.
--------------
Youk - The inevitable bumps&bruises are all the keep him out of the elite
Pablo - A true AVG anchor. 25 bombs ain't too shabby either.
Zimm - the 30+ HR appear guaranteed, but will he hit 270 or 300??
Reynolds - Clearly, I am not a believer and I'll be more than happy to let someone else take the risk.
---------------
Aramis - A walking DL stint. Even IF he were to stay healthy, what would you get?? .280 25+ 90/90 with no bags?? I'll take that same production from a Ross/Rivera type 10 rounds later.
Beckham - I'd probably take his upside over the guy above him
Chipper - I'm starting to worry that its not just health with him anymore, I do believe his skill are in a rapid decline. 1 more year???
-----------------
Young, Cantu, Kouz, Beltre and Figgy round out my top 15

1) Alex Rodriguez

9) Pablo Sandoval
10) Chipper Jones

I hope Sandoval takes the next step since I have him as a keeper in my longest-standing league, but I'm not yet convinced. Can he even sniff 100 RBI or Runs in that lineup? Doubtful. And I'll take Wright's more rounded contributions (even a dead-cat bounce gets him to 15 HRs right?) over Longoria due to the track record. I'm also bullish on Aramis this year.
