Help with depleted SP staff: Team Management Question

#1 Post by brooklyn49 »

12 teams, mixed league, daily transactions, Rotisserie league. 9 categories, but of most importance for starting pitchers are W, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB, QS, HR Allowed.

First, let me cry the blues--lost Peavy, Lilly and Slowey to injury. Maybe Oswalt is headed to the DL too.

Second, my apologies as I promised myself I would try not to submit one of these posts to the forum this year. Alas....

So, what I need is 4 to 5 SP to go with Josh Johnson. I've been trying to patch the crack myself, but shuffling a lineup for matchups of this magnitude is just overwhelming. I don't do matchups very well at all.

I'm doing OK in W and K/BB. Struggling badly in ERA & HR Allowed and starting to slip in WHIP of late.

Pool of replacement pitchers available:

Jeff Niemann
Randy Wolf
Scott Baker
Paul Maholm
Francisco Liriano
Scott Feldman
Tommy Hanson
Kenshin Kawakami
Jason Hammel
Jon Garland
John Lannan
Nick Blackburn

and a plethora of serviceable suspects: Zito, Looper, Guthrie, Ohlendorf, Hochevar, J. Contreras, Pelfry

I've gone with Niemann, Wolf and Baker to date. I've been thinking of Floyd or Liriano (if he could get healthy) for add or replacement.

If you had to pick 4 or 5 in order from this list, how would you play it?

Help!

Jeff Niemann
Randy Wolf
Scott Baker
Tommy Hanson

Ordering them is tougher, but you didn't ask for that. I don't know who I'd use as a 5th one, if you need that. Might take a flier on Latos, if he's available. Or even Bud Norris. If it has to be from your list, maybe Feldman, but I don't like any of them much, other than the four above.

Caveat: I'm assuming 5x5 roto values, so if your categories don't match up well with that, this is probably useless.

Well, I sort of did. Regardless, thanks for your take on the list. I picked up Tommy Hanson. Thought I would take a flier on Tim Stauffer tomorrow pitching at home against Atlanta. But going with a Padre is tough. Good call on Latos, but he is rostered by another team in the league already.

It makes sense that your ERA and HR allowed flow together, somewhat independent of the others, including WHIP to a certain extent.

Depending on how much true category management you want to do, your initial use of Baker, Wolf and Niemann looks right to me. I'd add in Maholm and possibly Lannan as guys to temper HR allowed.

Stauffer wasn't on the original lists but he is a decent flyer, and face it, they are all flyers at this point.

I spot started Maholm yesterday, at home, against the Nationals. He did great, until....yup, he gave up the dinger, the lead, and the ballgame. Flyer is being kind as a description.
