We Have Reached the Quarter Pole of the Season

#1 Post by viper »

In this marathon of a season, we have officially reach the quarter pole. There are two ways of seeing how far we have gone. The simple one is by days played. The more precise one is by games played. Days played has value in leagues which limit the starts at a position. This limit is generally 162.

We have now played 47 days out of the actual 180 days of baseball this season [26.1%]. Except for those rare doubleheaders, you get just one game played per day. Games played means plate appearances and plate appearances are critical for the counting categories. You should not be much under that 47 number. In fact 40.5 would be the place to be.

The better way to check pace is in game played. Some teams have more games than others but as of this morning, American league teams are at 41.0 games played on average while National League teams are at 40.375. The MLB average is 40.66. The precise quarter point would be 40.5. You may have heard it being passed last evening.

Today is the day you can multiply your current stats by four and get an end of the year projection. Just don't believe any of those numbers too much as players will change and category strategies will likely change. Still you can get a good idea as to how you stack up to those projections you made back in March after your draft. You remember those. They were the one that showed you exceeded all your goals and clearly indicated you would romp to victory.

Still this does mark a key point of the season. Next Monday, Memorial Day, is typically considered to be this quarter point but we all know it really passed late last evening.

Everyone, have a wonderful weekend.

This brings up a question.
According to the last MB projections, Mike Aviles is still projected to be a top 100 player the rest of the year according to my league's scoring system. When does MB adjust these numbers to reflect change in the players talent level?

The projection incorporates both year to date and historical data. The further along we get into the season, the more the in-season performance "counts", good or bad, that is the model should take care of itself. We of course reserve the right to supersede the model and alter numbers on our own if we feel it is warranted. This will be done on a case by case basis and there is no set time.
