Hit CVRC and Batting Average Baseline

#1 Post by AllstonRockCity »

I asked a question last week about pitching values and it turned out that the default WHIP and ERA baselines were much to high and needed to be lowered in order to get accurate values for my league. That worked great. Thank you.

Today I decided to dive into the hitting pool. While the values the CVRC gave look fine (as opposed to last week's pitching values) it did get me thinking about the Batting Average Baseline cell in the hit CVRC. It is currently set to 0.2450 as the default baseline.

My curiosity lead me to the previous standings of the league. There are 11 teams and the team that finished 6th in batting average each year had the following BA:
2013 .2607
2012 .2568
2011 .2587
2010 .2633

Does this matter? Should it matter? My curiosity is quite high, good thing I'm not a cat.

Empirically, the BA of the last place team is the best baseline - which has been pretty close to the .245 default.
