So long Melky ...nicke knowin' ya!

And it ain't about the 50 game suspension. Check this headline from the NY Daily News;
Exclusive: Daily News uncovers bizarre plot by San Francisco Giants' Melky Cabrera to use fake website and duck drug suspension

Think you can get him for a buck next year or in the last round of your draft ...course, your league better include the independent leagues.

One paragraph stands out to me;
While the particulars of the Cabrera case are unusual, the case fits a familiar pattern. From Barry Bonds’ personal trainer, Greg Anderson, to A-Rod’s cousin, to trainer Angel Presinal, many of baseball’s recent doping scandals have been facilitated by individuals in a player’s entourage who weren’t accountable to team officials.
Plausible deniability finally makes the bigs.

Between this story and the Boras-Rizzo story that strongly implies that there are some legal/medical/insurance issues related to the Strasburg case, not to mention Boras basically credits himself as being co-GM of the Nationals, the MLB Network is going to need to spin-off and have its own reality network, perhaps hosted by Jesse Ventura.

Ya gotta luv Scotty talking out of both sides of his mouth. Were I a certain Stanford pitcher, I might be asking ole Avenging Agent; "How come all that good stuff about protecting Strasburg from long term doesn't apply to me? At least HE has a MLB contract!"

And, how can I leave out the whole Bobby V mess in my own hometown.

Too bad there aren't any "baseball" stories to focus on like surprise teams making playoff runs or young players doing historical things.

Just goes to show that i seemingly know very little about this game and the way it it is run. Wish his agent handled my divorce from my first wife. It's a talent to get blood from a stone.

There were several teams that would have taken a one year chance on Melky - not sure the Blue Jays weren't bidding against themselves for the second year ...... but OTOH they are all in for 2013 so it was cheaper than some other options - not sure you get the SF Melkman but the KC version will play just fine in Rodgers Centre

And I guess that's what I find sad about this, Perry. This one is different. In the case of every other first offender for steroids, they were all welcomed back with open arms as well ....but not one of them came back to free agency. It appears the only reason any team was not in on Melky is because they had no need for him. The steroid thing seems to have had NO impact on any team that decided he was a possibility and to have him be one of the FIRST free agent signings is mind boggling. Veeck was right 50 years ago - when OWNERS start talking about the integrity of the game, the fix is in, Loria being a prime example. Funny how it's gone from "Steroids? DOCK HIM!! VOID HIS CONTRACT!!" to "Will two years be sufficient, Mr. Cabrera?"

Oakland signed BIG FAT Bartolo Colon two weeks ago - no one said "boo" about that :shock:

Everyone knew Melky would sign someplace - just not that it would be for TWO years AND for that much
(hopefully Toronto had some notsogolden parachute clauses in that contract and I am pretty sure they did)

Forgot about him. You are absolutely correct, Perry. The problem I see with suggestions such as yours is that they have little chance of getting by the MLBPA IMHO. I endorse the idea - but I can't think of a restrictor clause they could put in that MLBPA wouldn't squawk about if it wasn't collectively bargained. Then again, I saw no hope of Melky signing anywhere ...much less for two years. So what I think may be nowhere near on point.

I think the steroid issue has lost the huge media impact and impact on the public as a whole. I don't think the owners ever viewed it as a life and death type problem because back when it was in vogue people loved the numbers the players were putting up and were flocking to the games to watch. Sad to say but the novelty has worn off and time has a way of healing all wounds as the transgression fades from the public consciousness. Now if he were a wife beater or worse it would be a different thing. I wasn't surprised Melky landed a decent deal but didn't think it would be a guaranteed two years. One with a team option seemed more logical.
