NFBC Round One/Two
NFBC Round One/Two
Looking for opinions on my round one/round two picks - NFBC draft starts tonight - I am thinking at pick #11 in the first round I will be able to consider one of the following players Cargo/J.Upton/Prince/Longoria - any strong opinions on the best way to start out? I am thinking Fielder first, Cargo, then Upton, then Longoria.
Then in round two I am thinking I could get Halladay/Teixeira/Beltre/Holliday - I am thinking Teixeira/Beltre if I do not get a corner guy in round one, or Holliday/Halladay if I do pick up a 1B/3B in round one.
Thanks in advance for any opinions!

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
So hard to tell who is going to fall because each draft is different...........If I had the choice of all four of those I would take Upton.
In round two you take the player you like best. I would not take a SP there, so my preference would be Beltre because there are more first basemen I am comfortable with taking later than there are at third base.

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Thanks much - understand the logic - who knows who will really be available at #20? Upton would likely be a solid selection.
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Well - I've done that one (Upton/Tex) so I'd be a hypocrite to say not to.
Not that you should try to map too much out (because a lot can change) but odds are you will take an SP with one of your 3/4 picks. If you bypass Beltre at #20 - you will likely get a shot at a decent 3B in the 3rd round - perhaps a Zimmerman, likely Arod and Aramis. One should make it around to 4th rd, BUT they may not be the best play at that point as an Andrus, Desmond Jennings Zobrist, B Phillips type may be there. Or maybe one of the top C's makes it to your third round pick, if which case I perhaps you grab one and get your SP in Rd 4.
I have to admit. in the draft I took Tex in everything else dried up and I ended up taking Morse in the 6th and Cuddyer in the 7th and even Goldschmidt in the 12th - all which kind of bears out Perry's point about depth at 1B. But - I still think I take Tex and then hope some B fall. Youkilis was there for me in the 6th when I took Morse. In a regular NFBC draft, I would go Youk there. I passed him in the DC format, cause I didn't want an injury risk so high in my draft.
Anyway - make sure you have more than one play coming into each pair of picks, so you can adjust when the guys you like get picked, because in the NFBC, they will - more than once. Later in the draft things loosen up a bit and but then you actually have to consider when to make a move on certain targets and/or positions.

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Thanks guys - Upton was gone at #11 - but I was surprised that I was able to get Ellsbury instead. Then I got Teixeira at #20.
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
GREAT bargain on Ellsbury and pairing him with Tex gives you an excellent speed/power combination for you first two picks - Well Donetelestar wrote:Thanks guys - Upton was gone at #11 - but I was surprised that I was able to get Ellsbury instead. Then I got Teixeira at #20.
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
OK - thanks Capn. I have plowed through four rounds of this draft and added Felix at #41 and Brandon Phillips at #50. My next picks are #61 and #70. Am thinking about the following guys - probably many of them will be taken in the next ten picks though.
Pitchers: Haren, Kimbrel,Rivera, Cain, Shields, Carpenter, Strasburg, Papelbon
Hitters: Posey, Konerko, Montero, Zobrist, Mauer, Hart, Morse, D.Ortiz, Wieters, Avila, A.Jones, Youkilis
As usual, thoughts are appreciated and welcome.

For the second pick I would take Posey if available or Zobrist
Is this a fifty round draft & hold league or just a satellite?
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
It is a hold league - no free agent pick-ups.
For my fifth and sixth rounders I drafted Posey and C.Carpenter (Haren was long gone). So I have 2 starters (Felix and Carp), then hitters Posey, Teixeira, Phillips, and Ellsbury.
It's getting mighty thin at 3B and SS, but my original plan was to add one more SP, a CR, a RP and a MI in the next four rounds somehow. Lind and Freeman are still out there, as are some good SP and almost all the top RP.

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Freeman's hurt - so I would be careful there - also he may slip further than normal - so I would take a chance and see if he slides.
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
I would suggest holding off on getting another SP of you can. You need to get some bats. You WILL have to be ready to grab at least one CL (and perhaps two back to back) in rounds 9/10.
With these next two picks I would focus on getting the best MI I could - are Kendrick, D Gordon, E Aybar, Utley, A Ramiriez still around? Take a look at the OF's as well - that might be a better way to go with one of these two picks. Or get your fisrt closer now - who's out there?
I think Lind and Freeman will last - but have you considered Mike Cuddyer? If he's there I like him better than either Lind or Freeman.

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Thx very much - Cuddyer was gone. I wanted a corner guy - so I went with Freeman despite his injury. He really was the best corner left. The only MI left on your list above is Aybar - so I probably won't get him. I agree about the RP in rounds 9/10. Probably will have to do that. So MI will be weak. It is sure tough in a 15 team league.
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
No prob - keep us updated and feel free to ask about any players you are considering - you surely get plenty of opinions.
Don't psych yourself out while drafting regarding the "toughness" - yes it's likely deeper into the player pool than you've drafted before and the competition is much more prepared than what you will find anywhere else - but if you found your way to the NFBC it was because you desired the challenge. Your up to it, I'm sure - heck you are smart enough to be here at MB
One of the challenges is realizing that while constructing your team you will have some weak spots, you have to take some risks, grab some sleepers - BUT - you don't want to fall into the trap of letting what others are doing dictate how you approach your plan. (Well - not too much at least)

Plus the 7 generally weakest closers are available
so in no particular order
1) You definitely want to add a second starting catcher before that pool dries up - I like suzuki and Perez of that group
2) you have to fill out your MI with a starter - you can get capable reserves for both MI and CI as the draft moves along but you do NEED extra players - I like Desmont and Escobar best of that group
3) you need to continue to add stating outfielders - there will be lots of reserve outfielders later in the draft but you don't want to have to start them - I like Boesch, Tabata, and Kuble there
As far as pitchers you want to continue to add the - LOTS of them, but each draft is a guess as to when to take a hitter you need and when to take a pitcher you need.
I like all those starters
You should add another closer - even if week and particularly in your case later on want to make sure to add Sergio Romo as a backup for Wilson
Re: NFBC Round One/Two
Thanks Cap - all good points. I am worried that I won't be able to accomplish all those goals - C, MI, OF, SP and RP. Know you can't help with that - but it will be a battle to cover as many spots as I can. Re: NFBC Round One/Two
I would take Addison Reed over Romo because I think he will close at some point this year in Chicago while Romo would only get saves if Wilson goes down and so far so good for him. Plus if you get Reed you have 2+ closers and if Reed gets the job at some point you might have three - I would still get Romo but you could then wait for him.telestar wrote:20 of 50 rounds complete:

The only SP I would add immediately would be Jarrod Parker
Of the hitters I might well take Perez or Ruiz to give you a third catcher especially with likely to develop 1B eligibility
I also like Pressley and like LaHair who right now only qualifies at OF but will add 1B

Capn' mentions the two guys I was going to suggest in Redd and Parker - so I will just echo his recommendation there.
I also like Presley and Lahair and think you should be able to get one of them on your next pair of picks.
Parker looked great in his first spring start.

Re: NFBC Round One/Two
I would for sure get Posey's backup (unless you had two starting catchers on reserve).......IMO you need four catchers for these rosters...I might carry five with Posey's issues
You NEED more pitchers - don't be afraid to get the best/most likely to be called up at some point this year - Trevor Bauer, AZ; Danny Hultzen, SEA; Gerrit Cole, PIT; Mike Montgomery, KC; etc
Forget RP other than Romo or potential closers (Carpenter/Hou would be interesting IF/when they trade Myers)
I like Jesus Guzman a LOT.....just not sure where the at bats come from but it's a long season

Yeah, Guzman is a good get this late. Also, surprised Schafer is still available. He is the Astros starting CF, right? Are you sure that's not Logan Schafer of the Brewers?
