Is anybody else more than a little worried about his injury risk this year given his durability issues in the minors and his ridiculous workload increase last year?10. Cole Hamels (FIP – 3.70/ ERA – 3.09) – Hamels’ strikeout rate dropped almost a full strikeout per inning for the second year in a row. Still, his control is so good and his strand rate so successful that he is one of the better pitchers in baseball. He’s certainly still got some upside in his strikeout rate, so bid with that in mind. Overall, he’s got a pretty good defense behind him (sans Raul Ibanez – good luck in Philly ya fleet footed bum!) and the strand rate is niftily good, so we’ll assume he’s able to continue to outperform his FIP. It’s the 262 innings that Hamels threw last year that’s my biggest concern. This is a guy with a history of injuries in the minors who just threw roughly 80 more innings than he’s ever tossed before, so I’d be a bit wary of getting more than 190 innings out of him in ’09. He’s in the red zone as far as injury risks are concerned, and while you shouldn’t let him escape your grasp if you’re in need of a very good pitcher, you should think about letting him go once he reaches ’07 value prices.

I'm a little concerned with his health. He's part of the 3400 Club, he's increased his workload on average the last two seasons by 50 a year (132 in 2006 to 230 in 2008 with a stop at 183 in 2007). I've taken it by word without doing any of my own research but apparently he was an injury risk through high school and college. I could see him missing some time this year. I'm thinking of putting him around 165-180 innings in my own book.

Could be considered a hedge, but we've got Hamels for 195 IP, which will drop him a bit in our rankings. With Meyers, Blanton and Moyer, that is 3 pretty solid rotation-mates, as far as 'eating-innings' is concerned. Now factor in Kendrick, Happ and Park, and they have the depth to go a little easy on Hamels.
