AL Only Minors Draft
AL Only Minors Draft
13 team AL only league. after the auction, we hold a 2 round minor league draft. they are given a $5 salary. if they do not lose ROY eligibility, they are $5 to keep next year. If they lose ROY status, then they'd be a $10 keeper. Keeper salaries go up $5 each year.
So, we are looking for players that will be up this year and contribute or players that will be up in Sept, not lose ROY elig, and be on the team to start 2011.
There are only a few minor leaguers on teams, so the options are plentiful. The only players rostered are Justin Smoak (me), Carlos Santana (me), Jesus Montero and Desmond Jennings.
Who would you take with the first pick? 24th pick?
Dustin Ackley? (i own Beckham $10, so will be kept for $15 in 2011 and $20 in 2012 more than likely)
Chris Carter? (already own Smoak)
Brett Wallace? (will likely end up at 1b - see Carter)
Josh Bell?
Lonnie Chisenhall?
Jeremy Hellickson?
Kyle Drabek?

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
Throw Michael Taylor in there. He'd be in my top three. I'd be tempted to go Ackley, but since he's an unproven commodity, I'd probably go a safer route and draft Wallace.
Re: AL Only Minors Draft
ok, auction has commenced and I am on the clock. here is my team....
any suggestions on who to grab?
C(2): Teagarden $3. Carlos Santana $5* (George Kottaras)
1b/3b/CI: Miguel Cabrera $40, Encarnacion $15, Daric Barton $6
2b/SS/MI: Gordon Beckham $10*, Elvis Andrus $21, Brendan Harris $1
OF(5): Markakis $22*, Borbon $10*, Torii Hunter $24, Alex Rios $19, Andruw Jones $4
UT: Justin Smoak $5* (Julio Lugo)
SP: Halladay $36, Happ $11, Masterson $8, Morrow $5, Pineiro $4, CJ Wilson $3,
Erik Bedard $5 (Colby Lewis), Marc Rzepczynski $1 (Jensen Lewis)
RP: Matt Thornton $7, Ryan Perry $5
Dustin Ackley (even though I have Beckham at 2b)
Lonnie Chisenhall (will he stay at 3b?)
Josh Bell (will he stay at 3b?)
Brett Wallace (destined for 1b and I already have Justin Smoak)
Jeremy Hellickson
other?
note: the 2 NL teams that are part of the league will change each year, therefore, I dont want to look at them for Minor leaguers. The 2 NL teams are determined by: (1) The NL world series winner (2) The winner of the league gets to pick the 2nd representative.

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
Can you get someone that's just unsigned for $10 such as Jermaine Dye?
On your list I'd also go Wallace, Taylor and perhaps Bell. Bell might be up in 2011. Pitchers so often struggle the first year or two. What's the price for Jennings, can he be had?

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
No, can not get Dye, as he is not affiliated with a AL MLB team. Jennings, like Santana, Montero and Smoak, all have a $5 price tag.Tampa Bob wrote:Can you get someone that's just unsigned for $10 such as Jermaine Dye?

feel free to go outside my list, those are just some players that came to mind.

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
I was wondering if the Jennings owner would trade him and whether it'd be worth it. He's my #1 choice here. Your list is actually pretty in tune with mine. I'd go for Wallace, Taylor, Ackley and Bell before the pitchers - despite my signature I don't trust pitchers. Hellickson, Drabek, Rondon, and Carrasco can all get some innings later this year.

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
alright, so we are working back to my next pick, and not sure where to go now?
the following players have been taken/were kept: Carlos Santana, Jesus Montero, Desmond Jennings, Justin Smoak.. Michael Taylor, Chris Carter, Jack Cust, Jeremy Hellickson, Brett Wallace, Dustin Ackley, Tyler Flowers, Mike Moustakas, Chris Tillman, Josh Reddick, Daniel Hudson, Danny Valencia, Josh Bell, Peter Bourjos, Derek Holland.
I have one pick ahead of me... I have Carlos Santana, Justin Smoak, and Michael Taylor...
who should I be looking to grab, considering I already have a C, 1b, OF?
SS - ????
3b - Lonnie Chisenhall?
SP - Kyle Drabek? Jacob Turner? Hector Rondon? Deolis Guerra?

Rondon, then Drabek - I too own Chisenhall ...he's still a little bit away - the first two could help this year.
These are my views based on my own opinions and observations - your mileage may vary.

Re: AL Only Minors Draft
I admit this is probably the Tiger fan in me, but I like Jacob Turner. From everything that I have read, he appears to have the "highest" ceiling out of the names you have mentioned.
Additionally, much like Rick Porcello's contract, Jacob Turner's contract put him on the 40 man roster. It would actually not surprise me to see Turner pitching in Detroit in 2011 - similar to Porcello in 2009.
Some other names to consider include (no particular order):
- Jose Iglesias, SS, Bos -- in AA and on 40 man roster; more glove than bat right now
- Alex Liddi, 3B, Sea -- hit very well in High Desert last year (although doesn't everyone?)
- Aaron Crow, SP, KC -- 2009 1st rounder; on 40 man roster; will probably be up this year
- Mike Montgomery, SP, KC -- 2008 1st rounder
- Matt Moore, SP, Tam -- don't know much about, but the numbers look very good!
- Casey Kelly, SP, Bos -- I think he is overhyped because of the team he is on
- Kelvin De La Cruz, SP, Cle -- on 40 man roster and Clevelands rotation is a tab suspect
- Martin Perez, SP, Tex -- was compared to Johan early in his career
- Nick Hagadone, SP, Cle -- ground balls and Ks...walks a few too many though
- Ben Hornbeck, SP, Oak -- another pitcher I don't know much about, but I really like the numbers
If you are looking for someone that may help this year Rondon or Crow may be your guy. If you are just looking for the best/highest ceiling, I have seen Montgomery's name mentioned as the top pitching prospect in baseball...not sure he sees the majors in 2011 though
Not sure how much help I was...Good luck.
