CATCHER CONSENSUS RANKINGS

#1 Post by Todd Zola »

Please rank your top-10 catchers using standard 5x5 rotisserie scoring rules (HR, BA, RBI, SB, R)

Feel free to provide commentary.

Scoring will be done MVP style, your top catcher will get 10 points.

1. J. Mauer - no explanation needed
2. V. Martinez - will see more ABs than "typical" catchers because of time at 1B and DH
3. B. McCann - top 3, significant drop off after

The next group can be ordered in any which way IMO.

4. M. Wieters - purely speculative, but he could be the #2 fantasy catcher at season's end
5. M. Napoli - good thing most leagues only care about hitting stats. If H. Matsui's knee(s) explodes...
6. J. Posada - age worries me, love the lineup
7. K. Suzuki - solid across the board production; number of innings played are both positive (lots of counting stats) and negative (will he wear down?)

I have 4 for the last 3 spots, so I will give an honorable mention at the end (#11)...

8. G. Soto - he (and the Cubs) have to be better than last year right?
9. M. Montero - solid power from the catching position
10. R. Martin - Jason Kendall reborn ... the slide is starting
11. R. Doumit - just don't get injured!
10 Team 5x5 (OBP) AL-Only; 100 FAAB; *6 Keepers
1C: J.Lucroy; 1B: H.Ramirez; 2B: A.Cabrera; 3B: A.Bregman*; SS: R.Martin; MI: M.Semien; CI: C.Davis; OF: C.Stewart, T.Pham*, C.Mullins, J.Bradley, E.Jimenez*; DH: N.Cruz
10P: K.Herrera, C.Rodon, B.Snell*, J.Junis, H.Strickland, J.Verlander, M.Givens, C.Roe, T.Cahill, L.Giolito
Bench: N.Lowe, V.GuerreroJr*, J.Choi, F.Whitley, A.Hays
DL: F.Lindor*, B.Zimmer, D.Duffy

Here's what my list looks like today....
Tier 1
1- Joe Mauer
2- V Martinez
3- B McCann
----------------
Tier 2
4- Matt Wieters
5- Kurt Suzuki
6- Mike Napoli
7- Miguel Montero
------------------
Tier 3
8- Russell Martin
9- Geovany Soto
10-Jorge Posada

I have the Molinas Bros., Doumit, Iannetta and AJ Pierzynski as my next 5 and if I was looking for some BA help I would bump Y Molina up to #9

Mauer
McCann - I expect both VMart and him to hit about .290 with 95RBI's. While VMart might score more runs, I think McCann hits about 5 more HR, giving him the edge
Martinez
-----------
Soto - As much upside as the next guy, but he's actually done it before
Weiters
Suzuki - looking for ABs from your C?, look no further
------------
Napoli - serious power, will he play enough for it to matter?
Martin - I'm worried that he peaked at 25 (2007) and we'll never see anything close to that again
Montero - If he proves last year was no fluke, he'll be in the 2nd, or maybe the 1st, tier next year
Posada - age + health = PT risk. I feel the same way about the next guy, but his team can't stick him at DH if they need to
-------------
Bengie Molina, Doumit, Yadier Molina, Pierzynski, Ianetta - I ranked the top 15 at each position and don't want to waste all my hard work ;)

These often intrigue me but I seldom participate. Let me just give the ADP of the NFBC completed slow drafts. I thinks this will look familiar. Breaks are based on average draft position:

1. Mauer
2. Martinez
3. McCann

[27 pick break]

4. Wieters

[43 pick break]

5. Montero
6. Suzuki
7. Martin
8. Soto
9. Posada

[26 pick break]

10. Napoli

Doumit & B.Molina closely followed. #5 thru #9 were separated by just 14 average positions. Five "M"s in the first seven catchers.

I'm actually not interested in other ADPs..yet.

At the end, we will compare our results to some ADP results as well as our site rankings.

Thats how I see it at the end of the year...Below # 10 are a bunch of others that belong in a bunched bracket with the 9/10 catchers.. Yadier, Bengie, Doumit,....

1. J.Mauer Although I wouldnt be surprised if V Mart or McCann edge him slightly by years end...

2. V.Martinez
3. B.McCann

4. M.Wieters
5 G.Soto

6 M.Montero
7. J.Posada
8. K.Suzuki
9. M.Napoli

10. R.Martin
11. AJ. Pzski ( he makes it here over others that would be deserving of the 10/11 spot ,because of consistency and reliability)

1. J.Mauer - being WAY overdrafted!!! If that power reverts and a few LD don't fall you've vastly overpaid
2. V.Mart - Ellsberry Pedrioa V Mart Youk - Ohhh yahhh
3. B.McCann - amazing what being able to see the ball does for your numbers

4. M.Weiters - At this point I'll take the upside because the downsides not too steep
5. M.Montero - see above
6. M.Napoli - nice power from a C, if Matsui goes down and he get's to DH too, 30 bombs!
7. G.Soto - I belive!
8. K.Suzuki - steady numbers
9. R.Martin - you could do worse
10. J.Posada - great numbers while healthy, but won't stay healthy unless Yanks are smart and move him to DH

1. J. Mauer
2. V. Martinez
3. B. McCann
4. R. Martin
5. M. Weiters
6. M. Napoli
7. K. Suzuki
8. J. Posada
9. Y. Molina
10. G. Soto

You can quibble with Martin all you want, but I'll still take someone who's performed over a period longer than 4 months. Regression rarely occurs on a straight line, and I think he'll bounce back some this year.

1. Mauer
2. McCann
3. VMart
4. R Martin
5. Napoli
6. Suzuki
7. Weiters
8. Posada
9. Soto
10. Montero

- Top 3 head and shoulders above others.
- I refuse to believe a player just loses it at 25. Martin bounces back.
- Would not be shocked if Weiters ends up lower then 7th.
- Posada moves up with good health/
- 6-10 interchangeable to me

1- Joe Mauer is there any doubt, but power rise, is it going to happen again
2- Victor Martinez - a full year in boston, may challenge Mauer for the top spot because of HR and RBI
3- Brian McCann -
4- Russell Martin - he is too young to have fallen off already
5- Jorge Posada - look at the numbers, 22 hrs and 81 RBIs in under 400 AB
6- Kurt Suzuki - 20 hrs, 10 sbs not that out of his reach
7- Mike Napoli - I agree with what was said earlier 30 hrs not out of his reach
8- Matt Wieters - I am not high on him, but I will drink the koolaid
9- Carlos Santana- just a hunch
10-Miguel Montero

Just started looking at the forum again after a long while and noticed some doubt on Wieters. I am from Baltimore and have been following him, and he is the real deal - have him top 3 in catchers.

There is little question he is for real. I think placing him in the top-3 this season is a bit optimistic.

1 Martinez - his career year before he gets a huge contract -
2 Mauer - I had a hard time moving him down. but this is vmarts year
3 McCann

4 Napoli - Angels are trying Matsui in the OF just to make sure they can get Napoli in at DH once a week. that tells me something.

5 Wieters

6 Montero
7 Benji Molina
8 Posada
9 Martin
10 soto

Who do you rank higher Wieters or Napoli? I need to upgrade at C and wondering who to target.

Re: CATCHER CONSENSUS RANKINGS

#22 Post by AllstonRockCity »

my guess is that 6 weeks ago, the majority here would have said Napoli. Now that the games have begun, it looks like Weiters.

all else being equal, Weiters should be your target, but once you factor in acquisition-cost, Napoli may prove to be the better deal for you.

Mickey4081

Re: CATCHER CONSENSUS RANKINGS

It's Wieters by a wide margin. Napoli is killing many teams. Why rely on an injury to somebody for Napoli to get at bats? Napoli may still crack 20 homers for 2010 but he helps zero fantasy teams when he's spitting sunflower seeds on the bench. Grab Weiters who hits in the heart of the lineup and you know HE WILL BE PLAYING.
