I'm in a slow draft, 14-team league with 7 bench spots and based on the innings cap, 2-3 of these will be pitchers. This leaves me with 4 bench spots to play with. I'm considering a few different ways of maximizing value.

First idea is to draft 3 hitters that will share 2 spots. For example, drafting Holliday, Bird, and Carter. At least 2 of them should be starting every day, and individually their rate stats are great. That could easily be 70 HR, 180 RBI, and 170 runs between the 3 of them. It would be like 2 5th rounders (35/90/85 is Todd-Frazier-esque) for the price of round 20, 21, and 22.

Another idea is to use have more starters on the bench and play matchups a bit more. Take Jon Gray and Tyler Anderson and only play their away starts. Or draft pitchers like Glasnow/Nova and with the intentions of skipping starts.

I usually don't play in leagues with both a deep bench AND daily lineup changes, so this possibility hasn't been there for me before. How do you all like to best utilize a deep bench?

Roto? H2H? What's the IP cap? Are there waivers or free agents?

Pitching really depends on those answers, as does how I handle catchers.

Hitting you're on the right track. Multiple eligibility guys help. I like getting hitters in a platoon as they usually have an edge when they're playing. A guy like Seth Smith in Camden would be perfect.

Roto with 1400 IP cap

Standard 13-hitter single-catcher league, but with 2 UTIL and 4 OF instead of 1 UTIL and 5 OF, which also makes cycling players easier even without multi-eligibility guys.

2 SP, 2 RP, 4 P and 7 bench

Continuous daily waivers with FAAB ($100 budget, but no minimum)

It's about halfway through the draft and I'm lagging a bit in HR, hoping to make up for it with this kind of clever roster construction.

In an easily reachable cap, like this, K is actually K/9 so you really want to avoid low K pitchers. I prefer using the P spots on high-K relievers, being very frugal with my SP. We're probably too late for that, but maybe not. This usually crushes ERA, WHIP, K and SV -- and you roll the dice with wins.

I stream my C based on match-up/venue, etc. It saves me from having to see if my decent catcher is playing and having to pick up someone if he isn't. There's always catchers available, one of which will be in a good park, or facing a weak pitcher.

The key to maneuvering a league like this is being a day or even two ahead of the rest with pickups, especially on Monday and Thursday.

Here's a link to the draft board if you want to take a look: http://www.couchmanagers.com/mock_draft ... tnum=40386

It's a bit late on the closer front. I missed the run on closers by waiting a round too long, and after that they started getting taken rounds before I was expecting them to be. Now I'm in a position where I either take relief ace non-closers like Reed, Jones, Brach, Bush, and Barraclough and hope to sneak my way into the middle of the pack by the end of the season, or take the bottom-tier closers.

My plan now is to spend next few rounds filling out the hitting side to try to bring up the counting stats while mostly punting on average, and save the rest of the pitching picks for the end of the draft.

Draft just finished up. This is the final draft chart

I feel I should compete for winning HR, SB, W, ERA, Ks, WHIP.
I'm middle-of-the-road in RBIs and Runs.
I could finish in the bottom 3 in AVG and Saves, but I have upside in both.

AVG isn't so bad that I couldn't end up middle-of-the-pack, as I think my team is around .264, where .267 could get 7-8 points.
I only have one closer, but 3/4 of my other relievers have the chance to take the role over at some point, and if just one of them does it could propel up a few points.

I feel pretty good about the draft overall. I might be under the innings cap if one of my starters goes under, but I think my ratios will be good enough that if I need the wins or strikeouts, I can stream 5-10 starts over the season.
