Valverde - how much love

#1 Post by Tampa Bob »

10 team, AL only league with old-style transaction rules. We cannot drop a player unless he's on the DL or has been sent down. In our league closers are extremely expensive - $25-30 is common.

Valverde will not be on a 25 man roster or on the DL and is elegible for our minor league reserve draft. I have the 3rd and 13th picks.

Valverde will certainly be there at 3, possibly not at 13. If he's the closer by June 1 he'd be extremely valuable. As The Big Kid said, that's a BIG if. If I don't pick Valverde at #3 I'll likely have my choice of Zunino, Gausman, Zimmer, Correa, Rondon, Myer, Buxton, or Sanchez.

Should I take a chance on Valverde at #3 or take one from that list? If I'm going from the list, which one?

Auction is tomorrow.

Thanks,
Bob

Absolutely NOT on Valverde IMO - there is no guarantee he pitches for Detroit much less as the sole closer

Zunino should be the first player off the board but Myers (assuming Wil Myers) will probably be - if you can get either one you should be very happy but if you don't the choices would be either
Correa - SS of the future for Houston (and could be as soon as next year), or
Buxton - very toolsy very young outfielder in the Twins farm system
both were very early first rounders last June (might have been #1 and #2)
I would take Correa of the two

Thanks for the advice, Perry. I was leaning that way but wanted to make sure I was leaving no stone unturned. Trevor Bauer will be the 1st player taken if he's not announced/activated before 2 ET.

I actually may float the Valverde idea so someone else can use a pick on him.

As you would imagine, Myers is already rostered.

Thanks again,
Bob

Keep in mind Correa is only 18 (turns 19 in September) and spent last year in the rookie league, putting up a .700 OPS.

He is a long, long way from the majors right now, though his tools are regarded as terrific. BA projects him first appearing in 2015, and that is likely a September call-up then.

Not a bad guy to have stashed deep, but I wouldn't expect much from him (even in terms of trade value) for quite a while. Valverde is pretty much the opposite type of pick---almost all his value will be this year (whatever value that might be).

Is Gausman available? He's both more likely to make it, and will make it sooner, than Correa. Ditto Kyle Zimmer
