Weekly Winners/Prize Cards

#1 Post by deansdaddy » April 9th, 2012, 10:58 am

Okay - as a little extra fun, our own Don Drooker aka Rotsisserie Duck, has kindly donated some classic cards for us to award to weekly winners of the Subscribers fantasy league. This thread will not only be used to announce the winners - but we will also highlight the card (s) awarded for that particular week.

We will also give out cards to our monthly winners, our mid-season champ and our Top 3 finishers at year's end. We have a fun selection of cards that we will be giving away snd highlighting over the course of the season. It will be a lot of fun for all of us.

Thanks again to Don for making this possible.

Week 1- 1972 Topps Oscar Gamble

#2 Post by deansdaddy » April 9th, 2012, 3:39 pm

Paul Evans' Pentavirt squad got off to a fast start - led by exciting newcomer Yoenis Cespedes. Aaron Hill and Alex Avila chipped in some power and the pitching staff - led by Jered Weaver was very solid out of the gate.

Congrats to Paul on Winning Week 1 - he has won a vintage 1972 Topps Oscar Gamble card.

On to Week two.

STANDINGS FOR CURRENT WEEK
Travis is the Winner for Week Two. He edged out Steve's Black Sox team and Mickey and Jason who tied for third. He did it with pitching, and primarily his buullpen. Kimbrel/Rivera gave him 6 saves and Kenley Jansen provided two W's - which I beleive pushed him over the top in that cat, giving him the victory.

Rico - not sure but I think he was the original 40 HR SS in the AL. I know Banks had done it in the NL - but I believe Petrocelli was the first to accomplish it in the AL.

Team Southpaw 7.5 4.0 5.0 5.5 7.0 5.5 3.5 1.0 1.0 2.0 42.0

Andrew Finkle's Rotonut team edged out Team Mickey for the Week 3 honors. Micahel Bourn and his 5 sb's were key as his 5 sb's helped andrew win the cat for the week and provide a couple key points. Derek Jeter and Matt Wieters also led the offense which was very balanced with a line of: 55 Runs, 14 hr's, 52 Runs, 12 sb's and a .276 average

James Shields led the way for the pitching staff with two wins and 12 K's.

Now onto the card that Andrew won this week! Seeing as we are working with cards from the early 70's - I went this week with a member of the World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates of 1971 in Manny Sangulien. Sanguillen was a key contributor on that WS winner and finished in the Top 10 in BA in 1971. He was an All Star in '71 and '72 (behind Johnny Bench both years). Being a member of those great Pirates teams of the 70's, he is fondly remembered by Pirates fans. His best season may have been 1975, when he once again made the All Star team after hitting .328 (3rd in the NL). This team lost to the great Reds 3-0 in the NLCS that year. After being traded away to Oakland for the 77 season, he came back the following year and was the backup C on the 1979 "We are Family" Pirates that once again won the World Series. His career ended in 1980 as he was traded along with Bert Blyleven to the Cleveland Indians. He was released by the Indians and a nice little career came to an end.

A week late on last week's winner's as I battled a nasty chest cold that had me laid up all last weekend.

Ryan Struve's Whipsaw team won Week 4 and here is their prize card for that week.

Andrew Finkle's Rotonut squad was the best of Week 5. Cargo, Adam Jones, E Encarnacion and Jeter continued to pace this offense and they got a quantity effort from their pitching staff racking up 7 W's and a lot of K's to overcome a shaky whip to win the week.

His card is the Oriole great Mike Cuellar. Cuellar was an integral part of the great Oriole teams of the late 60's early 70's. After coming over in a trade to Baltimore prior to the '69 season, Cuellar went on to win the Cy Young with a record of 23-11. He would have two more consecutive 20 win seasons, helping the Orioles to the World series in '69, 70 and 71 - bringing home the Championship in 1970. He was on the mound in Game 7 and was the losing pitcher in a 2-1 loss to the Pirates that denied a repeat title.

Team Mickey won the week and will take home this weeks prize card. Not surprising that the Josh Hamilton owner would win this week, and it didn't hurt to have Josh Reddick along for the ride. I will post that card later today - just wanted to get those standings posted.

Re: Weekly Winners/Prize Cards

#10 Post by deansdaddy » June 4th, 2012, 9:37 am

Okay before we get to this weeks winner I am going to post Mickey's and Steve LB's cards that were won in the previous weeks. Sorry - been dropping the ball on posting these (life gets in the way sometimes)

Mickey's first card is catcher Bill Freehan. Freehan was widely regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his day. He was an integral member of the Tigers teams of the 60's, and as a team leader was an key piece of the 1968 team that finally broke through and won the World Series that year. Many Tigers fans will never forget Freehan's role in one of the more controversial plays in WS history. The Cardinals led 3–2 when speedster Lou Brock tried to score from second on Julian Javier’s single to left field. Freehan caught Willie Horton’s perfect one-hop throw and blocked the plate, and Brock, who decided not to slide, was tagged out.

He won five Gold Gloves, was selected for 11 All-Star teams and played in eight All-Star games, retiring with a .262 lifetime batting average, 758 RBI, and 200 home runs (100 at home and 100 on the road). When he retired, Freehan held the major league career records for most chances (10,714) and putouts (9,941), and highest fielding average for a catcher (.993). Bill James ranks Freehan as the twelfth-best catcher of all time. Freehan was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982, and Tigers fans voted him as catcher in 1999 for the All-Time Tiger Team.
