#1 Post by deansdaddy » March 5th, 2011, 2:44 pm

I have opened this thread for commentary from those participating in the draft as well as for those in the "peanut gallery" to offer comments or ask questions. Have at it!

Round 1 Comments

#2 Post by Black Sox » March 7th, 2012, 12:46 pm

Here are my round one comments...

1.1 - 1.2 ( Pujols/Miggy)- I think you can flip a coin with those two ( I'd prefer Miggy ) but either pick is solid.

1.3 (Kemp) - I debated Bautista/Tulo at this spot but ultimately decided that Kemp's counting stats are too good to pass up. I think .270 25 30 is his floor and I'll bank on getting more than that

1.4 (Braun) - I could be dead wrong but I want no part of Braun, I'm more concerned about how being a target in every opposing city will affect him. I probably wouldn't consider him till the end of round 1 and he most likely will never make it that far

1.5 - 1.7 (Votto Bautista Tulo )- I think these picks are solid choices and wouldn't have an issue with any order although for me it would have been Bautista Tulo Votto

1.8 (Ellsbury) - I have become more and more of a fan of this player ( more because I seem to neglect SB in the draft and he gives you a nice jump start while not tanking the other counting stats) , but don't think I would have taken him at this spot. I just don't buy the power fully and he seems to be running less and less each year ( although still elite SB). Add to it Bobby V might be messing with his line up spot and I would have gone in another direction.

1.9 (A gon) - Solid pick but I disagree with the premise that he will go back to being a 40 HR player and I don't think Fenway helps his power, although it really helps his BA.

1.10 (Upton ) - Love the pick, it's paying full price but I'd be more than willing to roll the dice that his numbers continue to grow.

1.11 ( Hanley ) - Fantastic pick, not sure I would have had the balls to make it. Most drafts see Hanley go in round 2 and I have usually been the one to pounce. I like him to rebound and the added position flex is just an added bonus.

1.12 (Cargo ) - Solid choice, just not where I would have gone. I envy this slot and what was available.

An interesting first round. I'm personally not a fan of taking an OF in the first, so I'm not sure what I would have done if faced with pick 3 and Pujols and Miggy off the board. I would have given serious consideration to Tulo there but probably still picked Kemp.

Hope we keep chugging along! I'll be out of pocket from 3 to about 7 pm ET today in case it becomes my turn at that time.

Cano at 2.3 is a steal and a half!

What a way to open the draft: Upton/Cano.

Kinda makes me wish I'd targeted the end in my KDS. Truth be told, if I had an office job, that's exactly what I would have done, but I needed to target the middle so I didn't hold this thing up too long when my turn comes and I'm at work.

Choked Reyes went one pick ahead on me. Came down to a scarcity/ stats argument. I also looked at Beltre but have my eye on some guys lower down.

Personally I thought Santana was a BIG reach that early, I'm not even sure he was my #3 catcher on the board. But that's draft style preferences.

I think it's high for Santana - but no way he makes it back - still I don't think I'd draft him there and I am his BIGGEST supporter on this site.

Edit - wrote Reyes at first - corrected.

A few comments of the draft so far.

Cano - agreed a steal, and think so anytime he's outside the top 10

Kershaw - my comments are going to be brief anytime making a pick from work, but I think he has just scratched the surface and wouldn't be surprised if he matches or exceeds his 2011. It's also easier to draft a top-notch SP in a 12 team than a 15 team as the hitting pool is deeper.

Reyes- he went in this draft right where his avg has been in other drafts I've seen. I've had pick 23 and 24 in my slow drafts and would have been happy to take him in either and he was gone. Of any established player, I think he has the best chance of moving into the 2013 1st round if he stays healthy.

Don't disagree - I thought real hard about Reyes over Pedroia for my pick.

As for Verlander - it wasn't my plan to go pitching with my first three picks - but he was too good to pass up. I would have taken Stanton for sure because I think 40 homers is within reach with the new ballpark dimension he will have to work with and I would not have been able to pass up that power potential - damn you Mark.
