Once again - showtime! Time to go back into battle again, partner. Like I said on the old boards, there's no way you're gonna read this - but I always feel strongly about putting this on the record somewhere in cyberspace. It was a tough year for you last year - losing Fran like that hit you hard. That loss can't be measured - but it did bring about one thing that pleased me to no end. You're going to defend our NL championship in person this year. Never thought I'd EVER hear you say that again. And I'm not going to lie - I think it's great! You are one tough sumbitch - you may have lost something off your fastball - but you're better put together than most I know. For an 85 year old guy, you have some interesting strategies planned for Saturday - and more importantly? They make sense. It's going to be great to watch you in action once again, dad. To repeat in our league is damned tough - let's give it our best shot, eh?

And I promise we'll do better in the AL this year. :D

A few days later Jim received a call from the coroner concerning her autopsy. "Jim, Sue seems to have died from blunt force trauma to the head. Is it correct you hit a golf ball and struck her in the temple."
Jim replied, "that's correct."
"I also found a large bruise on her right hip. Do you know anything about that?"
"Yes sir," Jim said, "that was my mulligan."

I know, coach ...but this one is going up on our web site - it's too good to pass up - possibly the worst 24 hour auction period ANYONE has ever gone through. I'm sorry, Artie - but I can't let this one go gently into the night ...or whatever it is it goes into:

Premise - separate 4x4 AL and NL only auctions - 12 teams, 260 cap auction keepers with 17 man ultra style reserves

  • Friday night - AL auction - usual 5.5 hours to complete - wrap up around 1 a.m. - Saturday morning - wake up, coffee - start to review prior eve's auction results. Look at one roster - WHOA! For what I believe is the first time in league history (and we're talking 24 years here), an owner has gone through the auction process (only players on 25 man or DL as of O.D eligible to auction) without ONE starting outfielder in his active lineup!
  • Saturday morning - NL draft - we send this owner our condolences on his effort from the night before and begin the NL auction. This same owner comes into the NL auction needing 11 for 51 ... and he leaves the auction .... with 13 units still on the table!

Artie ...all we can say is look at this as a rebuilding year.

Another year, another auction. Ready to go, coach? (yes ....it's rhetorical) - You have your work cut out for you this weekend - the NL is going to be a landmine. But, then again - you've been waiting for this since about January 12th - refining the plans (what are you up to in contingencies - Plan Q by now?). I'm glad we're doing this once again, especially considering what happened with the Boss during the winter - I truly wish I could have visited with you this past winter but I was just following a lesson you taught me - you take care of family first and that you'd be fine ...and you were ....and you are. So, back to business - we need for Holliday to come back by this weekend for one facet of the plan to work - and i will be honest - it scares the crap out of me that the name Willie Bloomquist could even ENTER the planning process .... but I see why it does from your perspective. Just remember one thing ...you came out of last year's auction draft all smiles and satisfied, especially about Escobar, and where did that get you? Dead last  !

You get the honor of throwing out the first name for bid thanks to your auspicious performance last year. As Mr. Aga would say;" Throw out a good one!" ... and lets get after this ...OK?

Well, Coach …it’s that time again. Different and better year with the Boss getting better.

Another first for you. And I would have loved to have seen the commissioner pull this off – but it just wasn’t to be. But now you see how us IT guys can worm our way in …we’re insidious and we’re proud of it. And actually you’re the one who let us in the door without knowing it. See, you would have made a helluva IT guy …let’s face it, you raised three of us plus a grandchild. Never occurred to you it doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Remember two years ago, you kept seeing those commercials on how to save money on your phone bills? You didn’t know what the hell it was but you figured you’d call them and see how to get in on this. All you wanted was the deal …what did YOU know about VOIP? But when you found out what it was and what you needed, you slammed into reverse REAL fast, didn’t ya. Not you …not Mr. Pencil and Paper.

But that was the crack in the door we needed. Then last year, you wanted us to investigate Netflix for you. So we told you the options and, to our surprise, you said you’d take BOTH options …DVD (which we expected) and instant (which we sure as hell did not). So we opened the door a little wider. You’re enjoying the movies but you are shocked…shocked I say …. that in order to enjoy this service …you have to invoke the I word. The I word must actually invade your home. But you figure you’re ok …ain’t no computer there, so you’re safe, right?

GOTCHA!!

Now comes the auction. Looks like we might not have it this year because no one wants to take it over from the idiot who’s been doing it the last 15 years. But then a proposal is made he’ll do it …but it has to be hosted by some sort of service. So, for the first time, we’re are going to do an online auction! And you aren’t particularly concerned. So, we figure, why not make use of what we have? The commissioner has an idea. He brings a router into the house, sets it up and BINGO …there’s the draft room we’re going to use …right there on your TV!! Only one problem – can’t adjust the fonts or windows so you can’t see it too well (That and the fact you keep screaming “Get that F***ing pointer outta here! I don’t need no g**d*** pointer!”). But then you once again figure out …still ain’t no computer here…so I’m still safe. For now! But then middle brother makes a possible suggestion …. And you don’t reject it out of hand. So now , we get to investigate procuring a tablet for you … complete with a virtual keyboard you still don’t know about. Ah …and BTW …you’ve been set up with an e-mail account! You’re coming to the Dark Side, Luke …you just don’t know it yet.

But for now, we’ll just do a simple phone relay on speaker between you, me and 10 other sorry sumbitches whose asses we are gonna kick. Last year, we had the right strategy, but the wrong execution. This year we are sticking to our specially modified Shandler and they ain’t gonna know what hit them.

Good luck to us both, Coach …let’s bring these titles home so I can have a shirt made up that says ”The 87 year old guy beat the 15 of you guys last year in football …how are you gonna feel when he wins baseball as his 88th birthday present?”

Love ya, Coach. I truly appreciate being able to do this every year - I know of at least one individual in these parts who no longer can – and I can’t yet know how that feels – not that I’m looking forward to it. So let’s go get ‘em.

And P.S. …you ALWAYS told me you were keeping McCann!

Another year, Coach. It pleases me to no end that I can write about this once more. For, as we both know, this winter has been complete and utter crap. It's interesting that at age 87, you finally get introduced to Medicare, part B. All I can say is ..."BOUT DAMN TIME!" Admittedly, there was some concern, but I have to give you credit ...you didn't dismiss any options when some of those diagnoses were floating around - and that hasn't always been the case. Fortunately, the test results are completely manageable so we're looking forward to having you around for a while longer.

I do have one small regret this season ...that CBS Sports seemingly can't support tablets browsing their draft rooms. Now that we got you a tablet, you have gone from treating it like you were Vlad the Impaler and it was Van Helsing to "How can I do that with this thing?". We'll still do the phone relay but I just wish you could look on as the auction progresses. I think you'd get a huge charge out of it, but...c'est la vie.

As for the auction itself.... well let's just say I like most of your stratagems ... I still think you're targeting the wrong catcher but we'll see. And you still have a huge set of stones for saying you want to draft a few college kids in the supplemental draft. I also like the idea of setting some prices with a few of the names you want to throw out early.

Once again, we go into the fray. Nine other teams better watch their asses. Good luck to the both of us, Coach.
