Re: Fanball ceases operations
Following up on Todd's remarks, one of my NL-only leagues allows you to optionally add an additional players, hitter or pitcher, during September. On-Roto handles that. Since this league, like all my current leagues, has no bench, we end up with some teams having 23 stat-counting players and others ...

Re: AL only goals
continuing down a slightly different path than Todd, targets/goals are a myth - or close to it. Some folks like to look at prior years results and then draft so that their projected numbers are in the 80th percentile - like a 12 on a 15 top or thereabouts. This means of targeting is flawed as you ar...

With regards to $1 players, I'm sure I will restart that conversation again this coming spring. I admit I am sold on that concept. Re: How to run an Auction?
I personally think the second method is bad. Knowing who is no longer allowed to bid seems to defeat the purpose of an auction. If Ubaldo is brought up for $22 and a whole bunch of passes follow, those at the end of the auction's first round have a huge advantage by knowing who they are bidding agai...

Re: IP min/max
nice question and similar to one I have for my 10 team leagues. With 130 pitchers rostered, I bet the free agent pool is almost empty. Also, I bet nearly every SP is on someone's team. If your league has a minimum, my opinion is that it needs a cap. And it probably should have both. You probably do ...

Two Trades - for me a case study
Over the weekend I made two trades. They were with the same person actually and he is the co-commissioner of each league. Both were pitcher for hitter deals. I was on the pitcher end in one league and the hitter side in the other. Both leagues are 5x5 AL-only with 10 teams. IP replaces Strikeouts as...

I considered him strongly as the player to be dropped in an NFBC bid. At the last moment I changed away from him. He is on my bench against the Oreos next week. He is probably my most likely to release player.

my trading partner is the co-commissioner
he called me this morning and proposed a deal for lester. There is something nice about discussing trades over the phone rather than with e-mails to people you do not know. I'm not a big trade person but when I do make them they are not just tweaks.

Lester for a corner
My team is better in pitching than hitting. 5x5 scoring. AL only. My top pitcher is Lester. HR & RBI are my major weaknesses with BA next in line. Two teams are interested and would deal value. To move up, I need hitting so I feel Lester can be dealt but he is my best. They have Tex, Arod, Morne...

Harvey Haddux lost a 12 inning perfect game. Now there is something we will never see again - mostly because no pitcher will ever go 12 innings let alone start the 13th.

is both an answer? I am a believer in the "Bully Hitting, Manage Pitching" mantra. During the season, if you did not draft hitting you are toast. If you favor hitters in the draft, by definition you slight pitching. You do the best you can but you cannot have your cake [hitters] and eat it...

In the never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way, I ask about the daily GSC for pitchers as shown in box scores. The formula is: GSC = 50 + 1*Outs + 2*IP after the 4th + 1*K - 2*H - 4*ER - 2*UnearnedRuns - 1*BB I ask the top intellectual minds of the Mastersball staff to tell me ju...

For NFBC leagues, having the ability to make a lineup change on Friday will be used more than normal. Everyone will need to make sure they have hitters to fill in for DHs keeping the pines warm - like my cats keep the pillows warm.

Long term I would like to get a few saves but short term I want to help my ERA, WHIP and Ks. My choices are two potential closers - Villanueva and Corpas. What are the odds that Javier is in another uniform next season? I think a National League team is in his future. He is a free agent next year and the only offer he will get from the Yankees will be the door unless he totally turns things around.

what I was trying to say is that while you review week 4's recommendations in week 5, I would also like to see an updated review for week 2 & 3 based on the most recent weeks results.
I am really happy they come out when they do. Friday may be better but waiting until Sunday would not be as good.

After three weeks, all bets can be off especially if the recommendation was an injury replacement. Also stopping at three w...

And how often do sites have long articles on trading players who have hot strats but will almost be guaranteed to fall back to earth. I find these interesting but f...

My AL-only waiver wire has zero available pitchers who received a start this week. I'm curious who are the best possible candidates for a starting gig in future weeks. Right now, Chad Gaudin seems to be it and only Lawr probably knows he liklihood to start. Almost all MRs who are not set-up men are ...

What I have learned after one month
For years I felt I wanted to cut back on my number of teams. But drafting is like a drug and you can get addicted. This year, events conspired and my typical ten teams got reduced to six. I am enjoying this season much more. My March was much less complicated and the regular season is easier to hand...

Interesting rules - you have any
Many league have odd rules or weird categories. I'm curious about yours. My most interesting is in a NL only league. The league has no bench so the only way you can "hold" a player is if they are officially on the DL. That isn't my odd rule. Moves can be daily and the process is that the l...

Simple question. Rate these these NL outfielders. Rowand is returning today and Conor Jackson is coming back down the road. The league has no bench so I have to release one of these three tonight to activate Rowand. Eventually, I have to release another for Jackson. By that time an injury may make t...

I don't have him in any leagues but I can imagine how his owners have felt. In less than 30 days, he goes from next in line to the man and now to the minors. I'm sure the MB staff can recall previous similar occurrences but this is quite a month.

Right now Javier has become a short term liability and I have him on my bench unless I see a great match-up and even then he needs to show me something first. Of course, he could have given up two hits and a walk before he was pulled. Those three runners are also his responsibility and he left the next guy up a true mess. Just bringing up an issue. I agree that starters get a bit of a bum rap when the next pitchers messes up a not-so-bad situation. This i...
